Universal Youth Service
The Merthyr Tydfil Youth Service in Merthyr Tydfil provides a Youth Work Offer for anyone between the ages of 11 and 25 years that want to join in. Youth Clubs are situated in at;
- Treharris Boys and Girls Clubs
- Georgetown Boys and Girls Club
there is also a team of street-based Youth Workers that undertake Detached Youth Work with Young People that might not access any Youth Clubs elsewhere.
The Youth Service also works with partners in the Commissioned Service delivery of youth provisions managed by;
- The Willows Centre, Troedyrhiw
- The Gelli Deg Foundation
- Merthyr Valleys Homes Youth Project at Calon Las, Gurnos
- Dowlais and Pant Engine House
- Twyn Community Hub
- The Urdd (with Menter Iaith at Canolfan Soar)
Activities are delivered by qualified Youth Workers who support Young People to decide on what activities they would like to do.
The Youth Service offers the chance to engage in projects which include arts and crafts, music and performance arts; sports and physical activities including other outdoor activities, information technology and activities with give Young People an opportunity to influence policy and delivery.
Accreditations and qualifications are offered for most activities which have an impact upon employability and further learning and training. Accreditations include the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and Youth Achievement Awards, Agored accreditations which include Food Hygiene, First Aid, Health and Safety etc. The Youth Service offers the opportunity to participate on off-site activities such as day trips, expeditions, sailing adventures and other projects that young people may want to take part in or develop.
The delivery of sessional programmes at Youth Clubs ranges from social drop-in sessions, sports and physical activities, information advice and guidance on a issues that affect Young People and their further development, special projects and sessions.

Targeted Youth Service
The Targeted Youth Service provides support for young people who are experiencing a range of low-level emotional wellbeing issues; the team also undertakes prevention work around youth homelessness. All support takes place within schools / community buildings. The aim of the service is to help young people to become more resilient and to support young people in accessing a range of services and tools to improve their individual circumstances.
Teams within Targeted Youth Service:
- Youth Support Team –Working with ages 10-18 providing one to one and group support for young people that addresses a range of low-level emotional wellbeing issues.
- Stepping4Ward Team –Working with ages 11-25 providing one to one and group-based support for young people identified as requiring additional support with their emotional wellbeing / raising awareness to help prevent homelessness.
- School Support Team –Working with young people to deliver BTEC qualifications in Personal Growth and Wellbeing and Workskills, this team is based within secondary schools and Special Tuition.
- Youth Support and Stepping4ward teams offer:
- A youth worker who will act as an advocate for the young person on all matters concerning them.
- Preventative work – Helping to prevent crisis situations occurring for young people.
- Bespoke support that is tailored to meet the needs of each young person
- Supporting young people in managing low level emotional wellbeing issues that are pre crisis.
- Signposting young people to appropriate additional support when needed
- Raising awareness of homelessness issues and advising young people of their rights.
- Providing young people with the necessary tools to deal with a homelessness crisis.
- Providing young people with information on where to access support for mental health concerns.
- A youth work approach that is free of judgement.

Inspire2 Achieve
Inspire2 Achieve is a Shared Prosperity Funded (SPF) project working in mainstream schools, the Pupils Referral Unit and throughout the community of Merthyr Tydfil. There is a clear focus on retaining young people in education from the ages of 11 to 19 who have been identified as at risk of NEET. Inspire2 Achieve provides early interventions aimed at identifying individual barriers and providing supportive actions to reduce the risk of young people dropping out of education. All interventions aim to improve academic performance, personal and social development, life skills, increase school attendance and enable young people to gain qualifications increasing opportunities and aiding their progression into further education, training and employment. These interventions include:
- Access to one-to-one support through a qualified and experienced Inspire2 Achieve Worker who practise active listening, are non-bias, non-judgemental and empathetic
- Providing crisis management, mentoring and brokerage to overcome personal issues that affect young people’s lives aiding progression into Education, Employment and Training
- Signposting young people to appropriate additional support services when required
- Bespoke packages of learning to suit the needs of groups of young people to achieve qualifications, some of which include Emotional Intelligence, Improving Confidence, Teamwork & Motivation and Improving own learning and performance
- Opportunities to take part in activities which can include Outdoor Education, Creative Workshops and Employer Visits
- For Year 11 pupils support with progression into Education, Employment and Training including preparation for exams, help with Further Education applications, Further Education visits and attending interviews
- For young people who are NEET and aged 16 – 19, support with CV writing, job search, application writing, interview preparation, Employer Engagement, Work Related qualifications, Life Skills, Work Experience and Volunteering
